In 2002, the U.S. Army began a multi-year search for a single "universal" camouflage pattern to replace separate woodland and desert uniforms. All-Over Brush was one of three finalist patterns tested across dozens of evaluations — daytime, night vision, multiple terrains — and by 2004 its desert colorway, modified and refined across the later trial phases into a genuinely all-environment candidate, came out on top. Natick's own ratings placed it first, ahead of every other pattern tested.
It was never issued. Army leadership pushed through an untested pattern that had never been part of the trial at all, borrowing the color story of the worst-performing candidate and, despite official denials, the pixel geometry of the existing Marine Corps and Canadian patterns. It became the Universal Camouflage Pattern — a scheme that went on to earn a reputation as one of the worst-performing camouflages ever fielded by a modern military.
This is the pattern that beat it. Reproduced here as it stood at the end of testing — the version that won, and lost anyway.
245g/m² cotton twill, cut straight-leg with slash and side pockets — a full-length utility pant with the stiff, structured drape genuine cotton twill is known for. Built to hold a pattern the way it was meant to be worn.
